Click Here To Purchase LED Lanterns
If you are an outdoors enthusiast, you may have found yourself debating whether you should purchase an LED lantern or a gas lantern. They both have distinct benefits and drawbacks. But when you compare them, you will probably find that the LED version is a more desirable choice.
The most noticeable difference between LED and gas is the type of light being omitted. In much the same fashion as a flashlight, an LED is a light bulb that is powered by electricity through batteries. However, unlike a flashlight, the light being produced is not focused in a specific direction. Gas on the other hand uses a fuel, oftentimes butane, to burn a flame which provides light.
When comparing the two types of lanterns, one of your primary concerns may be the amount of light being omitted. As a basis, 300 lumens generally will provide sufficient light to illuminate a moderate-sized room. Both LED and gas lanterns usually come with adjustable controls. The major difference between the two is that the LED lantern may only have a couple of brightness choices, whereas the gas lantern will not have specific brightness settings. You can adjust the gas burn and brightness to any setting between minimum and maximum.
LED lights produce a white light that tend to be more desirable to some people because it tends to be easier on their eyes. On the other hand, gas lanterns produce the standard flame-induced yellow light. You will have to determine whether you prefer a white or yellow light.
Because gas is burned, a lot of heat is produced. This increases the risk of an accidental fire, especially if the gas lantern is dropped or tipped over. Using an LED lantern reduces that risk to zero, but it can’t be used as an emergency heating source like a gas lantern can.
Perhaps the biggest selling point of LED is the operating cost. Not only are LED usually a cheaper investment up front, they run for a long time. A typical LED light can be half the price of a gas lantern and one set of batteries can run for hundreds of hours. You may burn through all of your butane, which is quite expensive in a few hours.
If you plan on being outdoors for extended periods of time, you will need to bring a lot of gas, which can weigh a lot. And if you are a hiker, you know that weight is your enemy. If you choose LED, you may only need to bring an extra set of batteries, which is substantially lighter.
Gas lanterns also make noise. They have that recognizable hissing sound as the gas is burned. LED is completely silent. When you are camping, it may be nice to completely enjoy the sounds of nature without even the low, constant hissing being produced by a gas lantern.
Choosing between an LED lantern and a gas lantern is a choice that needs to be based on preference. But if you don’t have a preference toward gas, the choice is pretty simple. LED is lighter, safer, and cheaper. If you are an outdoorsman, you need an LED lantern.
